Gondola rides on Lake San Marcos

The best things to do in San Diego for couples range from a private gondola ride on a calm lake to beach sunsets, wine country and museum afternoons. This guide gives you 25 date ideas, starting in North County, where a romantic night out can begin from $129 for two.

Full disclosure: the #1 idea is ours. We run the gondolas on Lake San Marcos, and couples on a date night are the ones we see most. Everything else here is a place we would send a friend.

We start in North County because that is where we live and work, then work outward to the coast, central San Diego and the mountains. Use the quick list to jump around, and scan the best-for notes to match an idea to the mood you are in. Most of these pair well: a beach walk and dinner, a museum and a sunset, or a gondola ride and a night at the lake.

Best for: a private, unhurried date with no crowds.

A Venetian gondola, your own gondolier and 50 minutes on a calm lake in North County San Diego. Every ride is private, your own boat and never shared. Romantic music plays while you glide, blankets are on board for cooler evenings, and you are welcome to bring your own wine, champagne or food with no corkage fee. We have openers on board, but no glasses, ice or food, so pack those yourself.

Price: from $129 for two with Lucky Hour (Saturday daytime). The Venetian Gondola Experience is $139, the Enchanted Evening after dark is $159, and the Sunset Cruise is $179 Sunday to Friday and $199 on Saturday. Extra guests are $30 each, up to 6 per boat. Rides run 11 AM to 8 PM and are by reservation only.

Add-ons when you book: a message in a bottle with your own note, an Italian gondola necklace, a rose bouquet, or rose petals with a long-stem rose.

Weather: rides go out in the rain too. If it is too bad, we reach out to you.

See our date-night gondola rides, or book a ride. You can read more about the water on our Lake San Marcos page.

2. Dinner at Amalfi Cucina Italiana

Italian food right next to the gondola dock, so dinner and your ride can be one easy evening with no driving in between. Reserve a table before or after your cruise. More about Amalfi.

For more in the area, see our date ideas near Carlsbad. Best for: couples who like to wander, browse and stop for a drink.

5. Oceanside Pier at Sunset

Walk the Oceanside Pier as the sun goes down, with the Pacific on both sides and coffee in hand. It is a classic Southern California date and an easy one to pair with a gondola ride on the lake another evening. Best for: a spontaneous evening when you want the beach without a big plan.

6. Moonlight Beach Picnic in Encinitas

A relaxed, spontaneous option in Encinitas. Pack a picnic and a blanket, sit on the sand and watch the surfers paddle out. It works best in the late afternoon when the light turns soft. Best for: a laid-back day date with a blanket and a sandwich.

Plan Your San Diego Date

  • Book sunset early. Sunset slots for dinners, sails and gondola rides go first, especially on weekends.
  • Keep it close. Pairing things in one area, like dinner and a ride at Lake San Marcos, beats spending the evening in traffic.
  • Add one personal detail. A handwritten note, a favorite song or a message in a bottle means more than a big setup.
  • Have a weather plan. Outdoor ideas need a backup. Ours go out in the rain.
  • Reserve ahead. Wineries, balloons and popular restaurants often require reservations, and our rides are by reservation only.
  • Dress for the setting. Comfortable shoes help on a gondola dock, and evenings by the water can be cool.

If you only book one thing this month, make it the most private one on this list. A gondola ride for two is 50 minutes on your own boat, starts at $129, and pairs easily with dinner at Amalfi next door. You can book your ride online or compare every option on our gondola cruise pricing page. Gift certificates are available too, if the date is a surprise.
